Description
Continuing Your Journey with a More Comprehensive Blood Test
In the UK, diagnosing testosterone deficiency requires two blood tests. If your first test shows low testosterone, the next step is a more detailed follow-up. This second test checks a broader range of important health markers.
For this test, a venous blood draw is needed. However, we make the process easy. You can visit a Goodbody clinic, or if you prefer, we can arrange an at-home nurse visit through Heim. That way, you can choose what works best for you.
What Does This Comprehensive Test Check?
This follow-up test includes a wide range of biomarkers, such as:
- Total Testosterone
- Free Testosterone
- LH (Luteinizing Hormone)
- FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
- Albumin
- SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin)
- Oestradiol
- Prolactin
- Lipid screen (cholesterol and triglycerides)
- Full Blood Count and Haematocrit (FBC & HCT)
- Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
- Thyroid function (TSH & T4)
- Liver & Kidney function
- Cortisol
- Vitamin D
- Folate (Vitamin B9)
- Vitamin B12
- Ferritin
Each of these markers offers valuable insights into your overall health. You’ll find detailed explanations at the bottom of this page.
For additional information, the British Society for Sexual Medicine (BSSM) provides helpful guidelines on managing testosterone deficiency. You can view these here.
Testing Guidance
To ensure accurate and reliable test results, please follow these guidelines:
- Avoid sexual activity, ejaculation, and intense exercise (such as cycling) for at least 48 hours before your test. These activities can temporarily elevate your PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels, leading to inaccurate results.
- Stay well-hydrated: Drink plenty of water before your blood test to ensure a smoother blood draw. Aim for at least 500ml to 1 litre of water in the hours leading up to your appointment. Dehydration can make sample collection more difficult.

Quick and Clear Results
After your sample reaches the lab, results are usually ready within 48 to 72 hours. You’ll receive them as a PDF file.
Then, a doctor will review your results. If you’re eligible for a consultation, you’ll be invited to book an appointment with one of our specialist doctors to discuss your next steps.
