Guidelines For Ensuring An Accurate Testosterone Blood Test – Finger Prick Tests

To ensure reliable and accurate results, please follow these guidelines.

This process involves using a small needle, known as a lancet, to prick your finger. While you may feel a slight sensation, it should not be too painful.

Important Note: You blood test should be performed between 8am and 11am.  This is to ensure an accurate reading.

Helpful Tips for an Easier Collection

Take your time – collecting a sample requires patience, but most people manage without difficulty.
Stay hydrated – drink a large glass of water at least 30 minutes before taking your sample.
Warm your hands – a warm shower, hot drink, or holding a hot water bottle can improve blood flow.
Move around – light exercise before collection can help stimulate circulation.
Stand while collecting – if possible, remain standing as this can make the process easier.
Ask for assistance – if you’re feeling uncertain, someone else may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Guide to Collecting Your Finger Prick Sample

Before You Begin:

  • Read the instructions thoroughly - it's very important that you follow these carefully.
  • Tests should be performed between 8am and 11am.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Unpack your kit, ensuring all components are present.
  • Prepare your collection area, laying out everything you need.

Preparing Your Kit:

  • Get a tissue ready.
  • Take your tube out of the protective packaging, stand on a flat stable surface.
  • Remove the lid from the collection tube and place it securely in the holder.
  • Keep the lancets and alcohol wipes within reach.
  • Wash your hands again before proceeding.

Collecting Your Sample:

  • Clean your fingertip with an alcohol wipe.
  • Twist and remove the cap from the lancet. You do not need to pull it.
  • Use your middle or ring finger, as these are typically less sensitive.
  • Place your hand on a firm surface and press the lancet against the side of your finger until you hear a click – it will only activate once.
  • Wipe away the first drop of blood with a clean tissue.
  • Massage your finger gently from your wrist to the fingertip in a ‘milking’ motion, allowing drops to fall into the collection tube.

If you feel lightheaded, lie down and elevate your legs. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Once blood is flowing, allow it to drip naturally into the collection tube. This should take no more than a few minutes.

Filling the Collection Tube:

  • Fill the tube above the 400 mark, aiming for 600 (both levels are indicated on the side of the tube).
  • If needed, use a second lancet to prick another finger for additional blood.
  • Secure the cap firmly onto the tube until you hear a click.
  • Gently invert the tube three times to mix the sample.
  • Wipe the outside of the tube to remove any traces of blood.
  • Apply a plaster to your finger.
  • Dispose of used lancets in your household waste bin.
  • Place the collection tube back into the protective plastic packaging.
  • Put the date and time of sample on your label provided (you only need to use one label).
  • Ensure that none of the label is overlapping any of the information. To do this you stick the label on the vial like a flag, as shown in the video below. This is important.
  • Place the Blood Test sample and Lab Return Form into the transport bag, fold over the top and seal securely.

Follow the instructions you receive with the kit and return it to our laboratory for testing.

Please Note: If a blood test fails, we will provide a free replacement once. Any further retesting will require the purchase of both the test and a clinic visit.
