The Early Signs Of Hair Loss In Men
The early signs of hair loss in men can be subtle but are important to recognise. A receding hairline, particularly around the temples, is often one of the first indicators. You may also notice thinning at the crown and a more visible scalp and widening parting.
Increased hair shedding, with more strands of hair visible on your brush or in the shower drain can be another sign. Some men experience a change in hair texture, with strands becoming finer and weaker over time, and occasionally a tingling or itchy sensation develops on your scalp.
If you’re seeing any of these signs, seeking professional advice early can help slow the process and improve regrowth options. If you're concerned about the reasons for your hair loss, speak to your doctor. They may diagnose a condition such as telogen effluvium or alopecia, but often the cause if male pattern baldness.
Causes of Hair Loss
Hair loss in men is a common problem for which there can be multiple causes. These can include genetically inherited baldness, hormonal changes, medical conditions or simply getting older. Diet and environmental issues can also play a part as does stress. In recent years there has been an upsurge in the number of stress related hair loss cases.
The most common cause of hair loss amongst men, however, is male pattern balding (also known as male androgenetic alopecia). It affects 30 - 50% of men by the age of 50 and tends to be an inherited predisposition to hair loss. The condition causes hair loss due to the influence of male hormones, including dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the hair follicles, causing them to shrink and for the hair to stop growing.

Male Pattern Baldness Treatment and Support
At Urban TRT we prescribe the most recommended hair loss medication in the UK for male pattern baldness. It's a once-daily tablet that works by blocking 5-alpha reductase—the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the key hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to thinning and hair loss.
This treatment has shown impressive results, with 83% of men reporting that their hair loss stopped after taking the medication, and 65% experiencing regrowth following initial hair thinning. Unlike some other treatments, it does not trigger additional body hair growth—it specifically targets hair regrowth on the scalp.
As with most treatments, early intervention is key. If you’ve noticed signs of hair loss, get in touch to explore the best treatment options for you.
Medication For Hair Loss
At Urban TRT we offer the two most trusted and effective hair loss medications in the UK, Finasteride and Minoxidil.
Finasteride is a prescription only medication, available in tablet form. It is taken daily to block DHT, the enzyme that prevents your hair follicles from absorbing the nutrients they need for healthy growth. As well as preventing hair loss, finasteride will encourage your hair to regrow.
Minoxidil is is available as a liquid or foam, which is applied directly to the scalp. You will need to use it twice daily to reverse your hair loss. It promotes new hair growth by improving blood flow on your scalp, thus stimulating your hair follicles into a growth phase.
We recommend using Finasteride tablets and Minoxidil foam together for best results.

FAQs
What should I expect when using a treatment for hair loss
«When starting any hair loss treatment, it’s important to remember that hair regrowth is a gradual process. During the first one to three months, noticeable changes may be minimal. However, patience is key—just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, achieving a fuller head of hair takes time.
By consistently using your treatment twice daily, you should begin to see a reduction in hair loss after three to six months, with new hair starting to grow. Initially, regrown hairs may be fine and light in colour, but over time, they should develop the same texture and thickness as your natural hair.
After six months or more, hair loss should slow significantly, and areas of thinning should become less noticeable. You may also see improved scalp coverage, with hair appearing stronger, thicker, and healthier.
Are your hair loss treatments suitable for everyone?
«Our treatments are designed for men aged 18 to 65 experiencing mild to moderate male pattern baldness.
A full list of precautions and warnings can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet or the Safety Information Page included with each treatment. It’s essential to read this information carefully before using any hair loss treatment for the first time. If you have any concerns, please discuss these with your prescribing doctor or the Urban TRT support team.
What are the potential side effects of hair loss treatments
«As with most medications, hair loss treatments may cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Being aware of potential side effects ensures you can use your treatment safely and effectively.
A comprehensive list of possible side effects can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet or the Safety Information Page provided with each treatment. Always read this information before starting a new treatment.
If you have any concerns about the treatment being offered, please discuss these with the prescribing doctor at Urban TRT. Our experienced support team will also be happy to help.
How long do hair loss treatments take to work?
«The time it takes to see a reduction in hair loss and the regrowth of new hair depends on the type of treatment you choose. As hair growth is a naturally slow process, it usually takes a few months to notice any changes. This is normal, and the best results are usually observed after six months of treatment.
What happens if I stop using my hair loss treatment?
«If you discontinue treatment, any hair regrown during its use is likely to be lost within three to four months. For sustained results, ongoing treatment is recommended.
To support your hair regrowth journey, we provide monthly refills of your treatment, ensuring you never run out. By maintaining consistent use, you can preserve regrown hair and encourage continued hair growth.
What if I forget to use my hair loss treatment for a day?
«Missing a single day of treatment is not a cause for concern. While consistency is important for optimal results, it typically takes three to four months for regrown hair to be lost once treatment is stopped. Therefore, an occasional missed dose should not affect your overall progress.
Important: If you forget to use your treatment, do not take a double dose to compensate. Simply resume your regular schedule the following day.
